Cuban university hosts international scientific convention

 CIENFUEGOS, Cuba, Oct 24 (ACN) With the keynote lecture “Science, sustainability and wisdom: challenges facing today's university”, the 2nd International Scientific Convention of the University of Cienfuegos (UC) opened its doors in this city.

In his words, ScD Eduardo Lopez Bastida, president of the local chapter of the Cuban Academy of Sciences, addressed the planet’s emerging challenges to the environmental, energy and society and the role of universities in coping with them as spaces for research and interpretation, knowledge transfer, heritage and technology, so they can contribute to local development together with the Government.

UC rector Orquídea Urquiola Sánchez said that the conference, intended to increase common efforts to produce knowledge, share best practices and build strategic alliances for the sake of scientific cooperation and national development, will address topics related to the environment, university teaching, sustainable agriculture, and socio-cultural, socio-religious, patrimonial and legal studies, among others.

Also featured in the program is the 3rd Meeting "Building alliances from the academy", designed to explore new possibilities for exchange and to encourage the search for alternatives based on science.

More than 350 academics, researchers, entrepreneurs and students from Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia, Germany, Spain, Honduras, Canada, Panama, Russia, Belarus, United States, Brazil and Cuba will participate, either in person or online, in the largest academic event held by UC to share their views and experiences about the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda.
