Cuban scientists attend course in Mexico

HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 15 (ACN) Researchers from the Center for Environmental Studies of the province of Cienfuegos (CEAC) upgraded their qualification in a Regional Training Course on Identification of Cyanobacteria Species by Microscopy and Basic Concepts of Molecular Biology, organized by the Mazatlan Academic Unit of the Institute of Marine Sciences and Limnology of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, according to REDNUC (Cuba’s Red de Comunicadores Nucleares).

CEAC is taking part in the regional project Evaluation of organic and inorganic environmental contamination in aquatic environments and its impact on the risk of cyanobacteria-producing cyanotoxins, sponsored by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

According to MSc. Aimee Valle Pombrol, head of the Cuban counterpart project (CIANOCUBA), the trainees updated their knowledge on the taxonomy and systematics of cyanobacteria for their characterization by traditional and molecular methods.

The project intends to improve governance and sustainable management of rivers, lakes and reservoirs in Latin America and the Caribbean through capacity building.
