Mangrove Reforestation, a New Project in the Works

Matanzas, Oct 4 (ACN) A new project in the works is expected to help the reforestation of mangrove along the coastal communities of the Cuban provinces of Matanzas (west), Cienfuegos (south-central) and Villa Clara (center), according to environment authorities.

The planting of mangroves aims at stopping saline intrusion which damages agricultural areas near the coasts, said Monica de la Caridad Monzon, expert with the Cuban Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment.

The increase of the sea level may damage protected areas, human settlements and river basins, that’s why the project will be useful, said the expert who added that the initiative is to be sponsored by the Green Climate Fund-- https://www.greenclimate.fund/ .

But before undertaking comprehensive actions, the project needs studies regarding its feasibility, environmental impact, danger, risks and vulnerabilities and its contribution along with the preservation of the environment to the generation of economic benefits, said the expert.

The project will be submitted for approval next year as it could benefit coastal areas in Matanzas province.

Mangroves are coastal ecosystems of great ecological and economic significance; they constitute the habitat of many species and provide protection in the face of weather phenomena, the purification of water and the capture of carbon.
