HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 19 (ACN) The Group of 77 (G77) and China have much to contribute to multilateralism, stability, justice and rationality that the world requires, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said today at the United Nations General Assembly, on behalf of the bloc composed of 134 developing countries.
Speaking at the General Debate of the 78th session of the deliberative body, which is being held in New York City, the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba stressed that the countries represented in the G77 have the responsibility to modify the structures that exclude them from global progress.
He pointed out that on September 15 and 16, Cuba, as President pro tempore of the consultation mechanism, hosted a Summit of Heads of State and Government, in which more than 100 representatives raised their voices to demand changes that can no longer be postponed in the unjust, irrational and abusive international economic order.
We are united by the need to change what has not been resolved and the condition of main victims of the current global multidimensional crisis and the unequal exchange of the scientific-technological gap and environmental degradation, he said.
Diaz-Canel stressed that the efforts of developing countries are not enough to implement the 2030 Agenda: they must be backed by concrete actions for market access, financing under fair and preferential conditions, technology transfer and North-South cooperation.
The G77, Cuban leader added, is demanding rights and will continue to demand a deep transformation of the current international financial system, because it is profoundly unjust, anachronistic and dysfunctional.
The countries of the Group have had to allocate 379 billion dollars of their reserves to defend their currencies in 2022, and most of the nations are forced to allocate more resources to debt service than to investments in health or education, the Cuban head of state stressed, and then asked: What sustainable development can be achieved that way?
Cuba will not cease in its efforts to boost the creative potential, influence and leadership of the G77, affirmed Diaz-Canel, who will be President pro tempore of the Group until January 2024.
