Cuba reasserts solidarity with indigenous peoples

HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 9 (ACN) The Cuban Foreign Ministry (MINREX) reasserted its solidarity with native communities in their struggle to become visible and survive.

In a message posted on Twitter in reference to the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, MINREX upheld its support and respect for their cultures and fundamental rights.

Observed on August 9 each year, the event was first pronounced by the United Nations General Assembly in 1994, marking the day of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in 1982.

This year’s theme is: “Indigenous Youth as Agents of Change for Self-determination”.
