Cultural organization in eastern Cuba will honor Fidel Castro

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, Aug 9 (ACN) Plays, talks and visits to historical sites make up a program designed by the Hermanos Saíz Association (AHS) in this province to mark the 97th anniversary of the birth of Fidel Castro, historical leader of the Cuban Revolution.

Rey Luis Correa, vice president of AHS’s local chapter, said that the celebrations—scheduled to last until August 13, the Commander in Chief’s birthdate—will also commemorate the 66th anniversary of the murder of the brothers Luis and Sergio Saíz Montes de Oca, young intellectuals with an incipient but quality literary work, killed on the same day in 1957 by the Batista dictatorship in the province of Pinar del Río.

The event will pay tribute to the man who became the driving force behind Cuba's cultural policy in front of his tomb in the Santa Ifigenia patrimonial cemetery, where the remains of National Hero José Martí, as well as those of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes and Mariana Grajales, Father and Mother of the Homeland, respectively, are also kept. Likewise, the program includes visits to cultural institutions and historical sites such as the Moncada Barracks and Granjita Siboney, both closely related to Castro's legacy.

Established to encourage the creation of works that promote the identity and ethical-cultural values of the Cuban nation, the AHS brings together, on a voluntary and selective basis, young writers, artists and cultural promoters of up to 35 years of age.
