Cuban VP reviews recovery efforts in western Cuba

PINAR DEL RÍO, Cuba, Aug 9 (ACN) Cuban vice president Salvador Valdés Mesa is checking the progress of the recovery actions under way in the province of Pinar del Río to fix the damage caused by Hurricane Ian in September 27, 2022.

Valdés Mesa stressed the need to increase the production of construction materials in the municipalities in light of the fact that, according to reports, only 39% of the 102,288 houses damaged by the event have been repaired, mainly because the province lacked the necessary resources, including cement, in the first half of the year.

Works are still pending to repair 170 of the 477 schools and some 4,000 tobacco curing barns, as well as 550 public lighting lamps, and efforts are being deployed to stabilize the water supply system.

Valdés Mesa also checked the completion of the municipal structures of the People's Power so that they can fulfilled their duties regarding the decentralization of competences and the development of municipal autonomy, in line with the powers granted by the Constitution.
