Environmental authorities reiterate willingness to cooperate in this issue

HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 11 (ACN) Ministers and high authorities of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation of the member countries of the Group of 77 plus China (G77 + China) approved a Declaration on sustainable, inclusive and resilient development, with science and innovation for the environment, highlights today the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment of Cuba ( CITMA by its Spanish acronym).

According to a report published on CITMA's official website, after the ministerial meeting held in Havana on July 4, 2023, in the context of the 14th International Convention on Environment and Development, some approaches of delegations presented at the meeting were discussed until a consensus was reached on the final declaration.

Through the declaration on sustainable, inclusive and resilient development, with science and innovation for the environment, the ministers and authorities expressed concern about the effects of the current international context for the implementation of national and regional actions of the 2030 Agenda.

In the text, they urged the international community, in particular developed countries, to provide new, additional, adequate and predictable resources in accordance with the needs and priorities of developing countries.

They recognized the role of science, technology and innovation in achieving sustainable development, in particular for the eradication of poverty in all its forms and dimensions, as well as the achievement of human well-being and a healthy environment.

The lack of adequate funding for science, technology and capacity building is a major challenge for developing countries, they said in the document.

They stressed the need to apply sustainable development messages to address the triple global environmental crisis caused by climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, impacts on food security, health and access to vital natural resources.

In the declaration, they expressed their gratitude to the Cuban government and Citma for the organization and development of the meeting, held as part of Cuba's pro tempore presidency of the G77 + China.
