UN System supports hospital services in westernmost Cuban province

PINAR DEL RIO, Cuba, Jun 30 (ACN) With the delivery of different donations, the United Nations System (UNS) in Cuba supports the provision of medical services at the Abel Santamaria Cuadrado General Teaching Hospital in Pinar del Rio.

Through different UNS agencies, funds and programs, the health care center has received equipment, medical kits, supplies, medicines, among other aid.

After the passage of Hurricane Ian, last September, we had immediate support that provided materials for the various services and especially for the Maternal and Infant Program, said Dr. Yoan Alvarez Garcia, director of the health institution.

The tightening of the U.S. economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba has prevented us from acquiring them, in addition to the damage caused by the cyclone that hit the country, he said.

Reinaldo Menendez Garcia, deputy director of the maternal-child center, also referred to the timely shipment of abortion care kits, implants, incubators, ultrasound and ventilation equipment, among other supplies.

All are in use and thousands of people were benefited with the help of the United Nations Children's Fund, the United Nations Population Fund and the rest of the agencies and organizations with their solidarity, Menendez Garcia asserted.

The facility assumes 95 % of the births in the province, with more than 4,800 children every year, he added.
Composed of 22 agencies, funds and programs, the UNS supports sustainable development priorities in Cuba.
