Cuba moves towards food independence, says the FAO

Cuba moves towards food independence, says the FAOHAVANA, Cuba, Dec 12 (acn) Theodore Friedrich, representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to Cuba, asserted that the island moves towards food independence.

In statements to ACN, Friedrich highlighted the progress of multiple projects and experiences in urban and suburban agriculture, making it possible for more people to have access to the production, marketing and consumption of fresh food.
He said that Cuba was one of the first countries to meet the Milennium Development Goals proposed by the United Nations to eradicate hunger and extreme poverty.
Friedrich was optimistic about the future of Cuban agriculture despite the obstacles the island must overcome, from the economic blockade imposed by the U.S. to the impact of global financial crisis.
He acknowledged that political willingness will to carry out major agricultural programs, such as that of urban and suburban agriculture -an experience the FAO plans to use and expand to other countries-, prevails.
He considered that Cubans are respected for their knowledge and ability to do much with little, and added that Cuba has experiences to export in urban and suburban agriculture.
Likewise, he highlighted the initiative of developing local mini-industries, which promotes rural production of competitive, quality food, and the measures taken by the State aimed at boosting agricultural development, including decentralization and delivery of idle land in usufruct.
