HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 8 (acn) The urgency of strengthening economic and trade relations between the Caribbean countries, in order to further leverage the strengths of the region and promote its prosperity and integration, marked the opening of the Fifth CARICOM-Cuba Summit.
Cuban president Raul Castro described in his inaugural speech as a pending issue the development of trade and investment in the member nations of the mechanism.
Hence, he raised the need to seek innovative, feasible and convenient solutions of common interest, and praised the updating and revision of the Trade and Bilateral Cooperation Agreement, which will allow free access at zero tariffs of 297 CARICOM countries´ products and 47 of Cuba.
Despite the economic difficulties and the changes undertaken in Cuba today to improve its economic and social model, Raul emphasized the commitment to "cooperate and share our modest achievements with the brothers of the Caribbean".
Various are the obstacles that threaten today the advancing of deeper integration, among these, difficulties with air and maritime transport in the region, and the deterioration of the Caribbean economies, due to the international crisis.
The inclusion of the nations of the area in unilateral lists is another factor which slows the development of their people, to prevent trade with other countries, which is the reason the Cuban President asked the CARICOM to demand the immediate suppression of this form of domination.
Countries in the region are not exempt from the negative effects of climate change, with an impact on virtually all productive activities, challenges to be faced together, as advocated by senior representatives of the Caribbean speaking at the opening session of the meeting.
