Severe local storm causes heavy rains in Cuban eastern province

LAS TUNAS, Cuba, Apr 17 (ACN) A severe local storm broke the tranquility of this city last night, with heavy rains that reached over 120 millimeters (mm) in just two hours and 34 minutes, which have been considered by specialists of the Provincial Meteorological Center as the heaviest so far this year.

The rains caused flooding in several communities of the territory where its citizens witnessed the flooding of the main affluents and sewage systems of the provincial capital.

The deputy technical director of the Center, Alexey Moreno Borges, stated that the meteorological station registered 124.6 mm, data that revitalizes the marked drought that the province has been going through in the last six months, where only 10 mm were reported during the first 60 days of this year.

In the capital municipality, no considerable rainfall has been registered since March 19, when the weather station reported just over 26 mm; however, specialists forecast possible showers and thunderstorms for the next few days, since April is considered the second month with the highest accumulated rainfall in Cuba's rainy season.
