Cuba designs new Plant Conservation Strategy

HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 27 (ACN) Pursuant to national and regional priorities, Cuban experts approved the new National Plant Conservation Strategy for 2023- 2030, with focus on the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, access to genetic resources of biodiversity, and the fair and equitable distribution of the resulting benefits, according to Beatriz Chávez Meriño, Assistant of the Group of Cuban Plant Specialists.

The approval of the initiative took place in a recent meeting to mark the 20th anniversary of the Group of Cuban Plant Specialists (GEPC), member of the Species Survival Commission of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Chávez Meriño remarked that the new goals are also aligned with the Kunming-Montreal Global Framework, adopted by the conference of the parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in December 2022.

Made up of more than 30 institutions, GEPC was established in 2003 under the auspices of the National Botanical Garden of the University of Havana.
