Cuban western province advances in the start-up of desalination plant

MATANZAS, Cuba, Mar 23 (ACN) The National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INRH) in the province of Matanzas has completed the construction of a desalination plant in Playa Giron, an alternative to provide the inhabitants of that town in the municipality of Cienaga de Zapata with drinking water.

Antonio Hernandez Martinez, delegate of Hydraulic Resources in the province, explained that this structure will start operating soon and that it will allow treating brackish water from wells to offer the inhabitants a product suitable for drinking.

The purpose of this system is to reduce the work of the tanker cars, which today have to travel more than 30 kilometers from Playa Larga to bring drinking water to more than 5,000 people in the areas of Giron and Cayo Ramona, in the latter the director pointed out that work is being done to install another plant.

Hernandez Martinez stated that the desalination plant will operate independently from the brackish water network used by the population for the different domestic activities; to access the product, users must go to the site where the plant is located and pay modest rates for access to the liquid.

Although the operation of the desalination plant will be modest, since it will produce four to five liters per second, it will have a positive economic and social impact by relieving the water tankers and bringing a source of drinking water closer to the population.
