Cuban eastern province contributes to the protection of prioritized ecosystems

HOLGUIN, Cuba, Mar 23 (ACN) The Community Centers for Environmental Education in the province of Holguin, contribute through a wide program of activities to the protection of the prioritized ecosystems, as part of the initiatives of the eastern territory with a high number of endemic species.

Norkis Ochoa Aguilera, a specialist in the field at the provincial level, told the Cuban News Agency that one of the objectives of these institutions is to make new generations aware of the importance of native species for the natural balance.

He said that with this purpose they promote the reforestation of mangroves, the cleaning of the hydro-regulating strips of the rivers and the collection of solid waste in the coastal area, as well as the promotion of research projects and events to socialize these actions.

Among the results, Ochoa Aguilera added, are the contribution to the recovery of areas affected by mining and that of species native to the mountainous zone, which, due to their rarity and strict location, do not have common names.

The Community Centers for Environmental Education were created in Holguin in 2012, as part of the local initiatives to stop the loss of biodiversity, one of the main environmental problems in eastern Cuba.
