Cuba to award international Mathematics Prize

HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 13 (ACN) The Cuban Society of Mathematics and Computer Science will present tomorrow in Havana its Sofia Vasilievna Kovalevskaya Award.

The prize will be awarded to a group of 10 outstanding professionals in Mathematics, Computing and their teachings, in a ceremony at the Aula Magna of the University of Havana, Luis Ramiro Piñeiro Diaz, president of the aforementioned association, announced exclusively to the Cuban News Agency.

Ann Hibner Koblitz, professor emeritus of women's and gender studies at Arizona State University in the United States and president of the Kovalevskaya Foundation, which sponsors the award ceremony, will give an opening speech.

Hibner Koblitz will receive the 295th Anniversary Commemorative Seal of the University of Havana for her position as the head of the Kovalevskaya Foundation, which aims to encourage women in developing countries to actively participate in the scientific and technological life of their nations.

Sofia Vasilievna Kovalevskaya (1850-1891), Russian mathematician, socialist and feminist became the first woman professor of the subject in Europe.

The 40th General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization proclaimed March 14 of each year as International Mathematics Day in November 2019.
