Association of Cuban journalists announces its celebrations for press day

HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 20 (ACN) The Association of Cuban Journalists (UPEC by its Spanish acronym) will celebrate the Cuban Press Day (March 14) on the 60th anniversary of its founding, the president of that organization, Ricardo Ronquillo Bello, announced today in Havana.

In a press conference at the UPEC headquarters, Ronquillo Bello said that the day, whose main activities are scheduled from March 4 to 15, will coincide with the 170th anniversary of the birth of Cuba's National Hero Jose Marti, the 90th anniversary of the death of the outstanding Cuban journalist and patriot Juan Gualberto Gomez and the 65th anniversary of the guerrilla radio station Radio Rebelde.

On the current challenges of the sector, he considered of special transcendence this context, in which a Communication Law is being studied, the first legal tool of its kind in Cuba, with the task of advancing in the construction of a new model of public press, topics that will focus the debates of the 11th Congress of the UPEC, scheduled for July this year.

For the date, the association's highest distinction will be granted to five candidates, who will be presented on February 24, and the award will be presented on March 14, Cuban Press Day, in a ceremony at the Aula Magna of the University of Havana (UH), he said.

Rosa Miriam Elizalde, first vice-president of UPEC, detailed on the second edition of the Patria International Colloquium, which will be held on March 13 and 14 at Casa de las Americas.

She added that to date, more than 50 foreign guests from 14 countries have confirmed their attendance at the event, which will focus on the fight against misinformation, hate campaigns and media manipulation against Cuba.

UPEC, founded on July 15, 1963, brings together reporters, correspondents, cameramen, cartoonists and other professionals in the journalistic field in Cuba.
