Cuba launches today Microgrid for photovoltaic solar energy

HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 18 (ACN) The Center for Information Management and Energy Development (CUBAENERGIA) launches today a microgrid for electricity generation with solar photovoltaic ("FV" by its Spanish acronym) devices for research, development and self-supply of renewable energy sources.

The technology is part of the Microgrid Development Project in Cuba, and is a donation from the international initiative Integrated Control System for Energy Supply through Hybrid Systems in Isolated Communities in Cuba Phase II.

CUBAENERGIA specialists also told the Cuban News Agency that it has been positively received in the country, due to its application possibilities because of its geographic location, where there is considerable solar radiation.

Its financing is in charge of the Science, Technology and Innovation Program for Integral and Sustainable Energy Development and implemented by CUBAENERGIA, whose personnel carried out the assembly and start-up.

Besides, the design is a joint work of the Center for Environmental and Technological Energy Research of Spain, the Bornay Company and the Cuban Society for the Promotion of Renewable Energy Sources and Environmental Respect (CUBASOLAR).

The Microgrid in question is made up of 30 kW of inverter chargers, 50 kWh of storage in lithium batteries and 23 kWp of power in PV systems.

A 5 kVA maximum power wind turbine and a 10 kW biomass gasification plant are also planned, and its combination of renewable energy sources would make it the only one of its kind in the country.

Ariel Rodriguez, specialist of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency department of the center, explained that the main novelty consists in the fact that it will automatically deliver energy to the grid in case of surplus of renewable generation.

CUBAENERGIA is an institution attached to the Agency of Nuclear Energy and Advanced Technologies of the Cuban Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment.

istry of Cuba, will receive the distinguished visitor, whose program in the country includes official talks with his Cuban counterpart, Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla.
