International projects favor food production in eastern Cuba

HOLGUÍN, Cuba, Jan 11 (ACN) The Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment in the province of Holguin extends international projects to favor food production based on sustainable development, one of the government priorities in Cuba.

One of them is Ecovalor, for the modernization of agricultural tools—made more expensive by the U.S. blockade—whose provincial coordinator Norelis Peña remarked that will contribute to tackle climate change, develop tourism and improve quality of life at community level, among other benefits, as several municipalities implement agro-ecological techniques to increase the yield of various crops in local production clusters and reduce the use of industrial fertilizers.

Ecovalor lso provides for a better quality of life at community levelof the communities surrounding protected natural sites, where environmental education focused on the protection of native flora and fauna is introduced, the specialist added.

Since 2018, the United Nations Development Program is engaged, through Ecovalor, in ecosystem conservation actions undertaken in several Cuban provinces as a tool for decision-making at different levels and for the integration of science, tourism and agriculture.
