Cuba promotes establishment of Green University

HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 22 (ACN) The Ministry of Higher Education (MES) is promoting the creation of a Green University on account of its extraordinary human capital years of experience in environmental management.

“Rather than a goal, its creation is a work philosophy,” said Doctor of Science Juan Ramón Montaño Calcines, Technical Advisor with MES’s Undergraduate Professional Education Division. “The initiative is based on the transfer of environment-friendly paradigms and technologies, so our first center of this kind could be the Marta Abreu University of Las Villas.”

In this respect, he pointed out that the initial proposal takes into account that this University’s syllabus is focused on environmental protection and sustainable development and has in place a number of strategies related to the waste disposal and the rational use of resources in coordination with municipal governments.

MES remarked that the decision is in keeping with the UN Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, which Cuba strives to fulfill, as evidenced by its State Plan to tackle climate change, known as Tarea Vida (Task Life).
