Cuban President Calls to Develop Ecological Agriculture

Havana, Dec 12 (ACN) Cuba needs to develop ecological agriculture in today’s adverse scenario, said Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel while addressing the Cuban Parliament on Monday.

The head of state stressed the urgency to produce food with at the lowest hard-currency cost to back food sovereignty.

During the 10th Session of the 9th Legislature of the Cuban National Assembly, Diaz-Canel said that good practices increase in Cuba while several producers are advancing ecological culture. There is science and innovation to address in issues relevant to the development of bio-products, genetics and animal feed production.

The head of state recalled that the use of hard currency would lower if the country could cut yearly food imports amounting to two billion dollars, and he stressed the importance of combining local production systems to meet the food demand of the people.

Cuba’s Food Security and Sovereignty stipulates priorities such as the decrease of food imports, the quality of food and the decrease of losses and wastes.

On Monday, Cuban lawmakers were briefed by the Agriculture Ministry about production levels from 2010 to 2018, which slightly increase; however those levels fell from 2019 to 2021 and a slight recover has been observed this year.
