Cuban botanical garden will attend international event

CIENFUEGOS, Cuba, Nov 3 (ACN) The Botanical Garden of the province of Cienfuegos (JBC) will present the results of two important research projects to the 3rd Congress of the Network of Botanical Gardens of the Caribbean and Central America, to be held in the Bahamas on Nov. 14 to 18.

During the conference, also known as "Botanical Bridges", experts from several countries will share their views and knowledge and suggest innovative ideas to cope with common challenges facing regional arboreta and related institutes.

JBC director Leosveli Vasallo Rodríguez said that one of the studies has to do with the development of Caribbean living plant collections and herbariums thanks to the ship Utowana—which completed five expeditions around the world between 1925 and 1928 and brought 275 species of tropical exotic plants to this region—and the other is about the conservation work carried out by local specialists in the last three years, and added that Cuba will also share the results of projects funded by the National Environment Fund and the Botanical Garden International Conservation.

Established in 1901 as the Soledad Experimental Station of Harvard University, JBC was granted National Monument status in 1989 and in 2005 won the National Conservation Award for its role in salvaging endangered plants.

Panama City and Cuba hosted the first and second Botanical Bridges congresses in 2016 and 2018, respectively. Both meetings laid the groundwork for the creation of aforementioned Network, whose main goal is to promote cooperation among experts from these entities.
