Havana, Oct 5 (ACN) The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) will contribute seeds and other resources to help replant fields affected in the western Cuban province of Pinar del Rio by the recent ravaging passage of hurricane Ian.
FAO representative in Cuba Marcelo Resende toured the westernmost Cuban territory to offer technical assistance for the local recovery. He said that his organization will initially contribute 500 thousand dollars in an urgent action to invest in seeds and in the rehabilitation of cultivation areas, particularly for short-cycle crops.
An assessment of the affected areas suggested that main needs include seeds, the purchase of roofing material for warehouses and animal-raising facilities, as well as water tanks and feed.
Resende also said that collaboration agencies and diplomatic missions have been in contact with Cuban authorities to offer support in the threshold of the passage of the strong hurricane.
