HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 14 (ACN) A debate took place today in the 8th Session of the National Board of the Union of Cuban Journalists (UPEC), attended by 15 media outlets—including ACN—about a project to change the existing model of press editorial and economic management.
UPEC president Ricardo Ronquillo Bello said that the project seeks to consolidate as multimedia and engage local and national talent in the production of innovative contents and the design of a business model for each media outlet based on possible services and products, depending on its social purpose.
“The idea is to receive part of the funds from the State budget and to develop an income collection system to promote projects, innovate, solve urgent problems in the newsroom and pay the contributors properly,” he remarked.
José Alejandro Rodríguez, winner of the 2013 José Martí National Journalism Award, urged to create a permanent media outlet observatory, whereas UPEC first vice-president Miriam Elizalde Zorrilla referred to the necessary far-reaching transformations in the press structure’s methodology and the improvement of its technical, financial and connectivity capacity.
