UNDP regional director visits province in western Cuba

ARTEMISA, Cuba, Jul 7 (ACN) Luis Felipe López-Calva, UN assistant secretary-general and regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), began a working visit to the province of Artemisa.

His program features a meeting at the Government Development Center, where he will learn about the province’s development strategy and its participation in UNDP projects under way in the region.

Provincial development director Rodolfo Moreira Rosell, remarked that Mr. López-Calva’s agenda includes talks with women engaged in vermiculture and workers of an agro-ecological farm in the community of Las Terrazas, in Sierra del Rosario.

Three of the province’s municipalities have benefited from UNDEP’s project Environmental Bases for Local Food Sustainability (BASAL) on adaptation to climate change in local and national agriculture.

As the leading UN agency in international development, UNDP works in some 170 countries and regions to fight poverty and inequality and provide support in policy development, capacity building and resilience mechanisms with a view to the 2030 Agenda.
