Havana, Jun 7 (ACN) Cuba commemorated on Tuesday the 87th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Holy See, an event that took place in 1935 under Decree Law 208 which established a Vatican’s diplomatic mission on the island.
Cuba reiterated its willingness to keep strengthening bilateral relations with the Holy See, marked by a record of positive events and collaboration along all these years and based on mutual respect and recognition, according to the Twitter account of the Cuban Foreign Ministry.
Over the past 87 years of stable relations, significant official visits have taken place, including those of Cuban presidents to the Vatican like the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro who visited in 1996; former US president Raul Castro in 2015.
In 2013, current president Miguel Diaz-Canel, then Cuba’s First Vice-President led the Cuban delegation which attended the initiation ceremony for Pope Francis.
