New wastewater treatment technology presented today

HAVANA, Cuba, May 16 (ACN) An environmentally friendly and technologically innovative project adapted to the tropics for wastewater treatment in local plants will be presented today in this city.

Known by the acronym CARIBSAN, it is designed for equipment-based sanitation in the Caribbean, according to Elizabeth Cruz Silva, Senior Institutional Communication Specialist of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources, who said the ultimate goal is to promote and develop these processes with planted filters in the region.

She mentioned the example of the French Antilles, where local facilities called Heliconia psittacorum (parrot’s flower) have long proved their usefulness to this end.

This nature-based technology is effective, eco-friendly, easier to manage and more economical than a conventional system resistant to the region's hydro-meteorological phenomena.

The French Antilles are made up of Martinique, Guadeloupe and five smaller islands in the Caribbean Sea.
