CIEGO DE ÁVILA, Cuba, May 4 (ACN) The design of management plans for connectivity zones of the Bamburanao Special Region for Sustainable Development (REDS) will facilitate planning and governmental decision-making for the benefit of five municipalities in central Cuba.
Pilot studies are under way in urban settlement and rural areas of the province of Ciego de Avila, according to Freddy Morales Ruitiña, technical coordinator of the international project Connecting Landscapes, who described some ongoing community research projects involving the environment and the preparation of recommendations for the sustainable management of the target areas which are bound to improve the standard of living of about 10,000 inhabitants.
“The purpose is to make the most of the goods and services of biological biodiversity with measures to increase water quality and reduce the runoff caused by the lack of vegetation, among others,” he remarked.
Other plans are related to agroforestry practices, the use of renewable energy sources—mainly solar panels—and geographic studies to define solutions and facilitate local government management with a view to promoting sustainable development through the efficient management of local resources.
