Cuban Rural Areas Use Solar Panels to Pump Drinking Water

Holguin, May 3 (ACN) The use of solar panels to pump drinking water to rural households in this eastern Cuban province is part of renewable energy-based initiatives to improve the people’s quality of life.

Cubasolar society representative Alexander Leyva told the Cuban News Agency that the project benefits six human settlements in the Baguanos municipality, 30 kilometers from the provincial city capital of Holguin. In a second stage the initiative will reach other farms and towns.

Cubasolar is the Cuban Society for the Promotion of Renewable Energy Sources; its projects also include working with students and professors from the technological education centers in the province, through lectures, setting up equipment and other actions that support the curricula.

Cuba’s Renewable Energy Program includes the use of biomass, hydroelectric plants, solar and wind farms. At present the country’s energy use is largely based on fossil fuels.
