Eastern Cuban province implements measures to mitigate drought impacts

HOLGUIN, Cuba, Apr 26 (ACN) The creation of alternative water supply sources in areas with the highest incidence of drought is part of the plan of measures adopted in the province of Holguin to mitigate the impact of these affectations due to the low levels of rainfall in their territories.

There are currently some 36 communities affected by the deficient supply of this important liquid through the water networks, with direct impacts on more than 81,000 inhabitants distributed in the 14 municipalities.

The strategy to face the drought is based on reducing to less than seven days the service cycles to the population, one of the priorities of the sector, and at the same time facilitating the use of pipes and other short-term actions, Juan Mario Hechavarria, deputy sub-delegate of the Provincial Water Resources Enterprise, told the Cuban News Agency.

At the same time, there are easy access points installed in the areas with the greatest deficit of water and hand pumps, also extended to communities of the provincial capital, the executive stressed.

The investments for the water treatment plants in the capital city and Cacocum also continue in the territory, as well as the linkages with the 26th of July Agricultural Implements Factory in the production of parts and components for this sector, which contributes to the substitution of imports.

Even in the midst of the economic crisis generated by the pandemic and the tightening of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States for the last six decades, this entity has more than 200 million pesos for the repair and maintenance of works aimed at supplying water to the population, as one of the main social projects in the country.
