Homage to Che Guevara in the City Treasuring his Mortal RemainsHAVANA, Cuba, Oct 17 (acn) Cubans in the city of Santa Clara paid tribute to Cuban-Argentinean guerrilla fighter Ernesto Che Guevara, on the 17th anniversary of the laying to rest of his mortal remains in a Mausoleum of this central Cuban city.

Workers with the Interior Ministry laid flowers at the niches of Che and his compatriots killed in combat in Bolivia, while students and teachers in Santa Clara, which was liberated by Che's troops in 1958, laid flora wreaths at the huge sculpture of Che standing on top of the mausoleum.

Che Guevara was the first commander appointed by Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro during the guerrilla fight against the Batista dictatorship on the Sierra Maestra mountains.

After the triumph of the revolution in 1959, Che was assigned different tasks, such as president of the Cuban National Bank and later minister of Industries. He also represented Cuba at several international forums.

In 1965, Che led a guerrilla front in Congo against the intervention of white mercenaries.

The finding of the mortal remains of Che and several of his compatriots in Bolivia and their transfer to Cuba took place in 1997, which met the wish of the Cuban people.
