International symposium on gender and energy kicks off today in Havana

HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 29 (ACN) An International Symposium on Gender and Energy begins today in Havana, when the project Strengthening the leadership and participation of women in Cuba in the Renewable Energy Sector (FORMER by its Spanish acronym) will be presented.

Specialists from Costa Rica, Colombia, Cuba, Guatemala and Mexico will take part in the discussions until tomorrow at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba, the Cuban News Agency was informed by the Electric Company (UNE), one of the entities of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, promoter of the aforementioned initiative.

Electric Company in Holguin(eastern Cuba) is the technical part and the executor of the project, which is expected to benefit 1,050 rural dwellings, with the participation of Cowater Sogema International Inc. (Cowater), the business organizations Exporting Importer of Electroenergetic Objectives (Energoimport) and Renewable Energy Sources.

The University of Moa Dr. Antonio Nuñez Jimenez (a mining-metallurgical municipality in the province of Holguin) and the Ministry of Education, among others.

FORMER aims to empower women's leadership and participation in the renewable energy (RE) sector in the Holguin territory to improve their social and economic well-being and that of vulnerable communities through resilient technologies.

It is supported by grants from the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (GAC) and Sherritt International Corporation, along with a local contribution from UNE.
