City Management Forum Opens with a Look at Cuban Heritage

Camaguey, Cuba, Feb 22 (ACN) The tangible and intangible values of Cuban patrimonial cities were on the spotlight of participants during the opening day of the 15th National Symposium on City Management Challenges, underway at the Santa Cecilia Conventions Center in this eastern Cuban city.
The forum, sponsored by the Camaguey City Historian’s Office, welcomes the 25th anniversary of the institution to be marked on February 24.

Keynote lectures, workshops and commission sessions with the participation of outstanding Cuban and foreign experts addressed issues such as sustainability and resilience in the management of the patrimonial legacy.

The president of the International Monuments Council’s Spanish Committee, Jordi Tresserras Juan addressed the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda.

Beyond all infrastructure, the real potential of a locality lies in its own soul, history, sentiments and idiosyncrasy, said Tresserras Juan. He noted that there are so many examples around the world to corroborate this statement; for instance, in Cuba there is the Vinales Valley, in the western Pinar del Rio province, where international entities, the local government and the community managed to recover traditional culture to favor local values as a tourist destination and at the same time contribute to the economy.

Other lectures included the presentation by the director of Camaguey City Historian’s Office Jose Rodriguez who addressed the performance of the office in the past 25 years, and that by Anelis Marichal who heads the local urban and territorial office; she addressed the territorial organization and soil management law.

On Wednesday, the forum will include a meeting of executives from the network of historian offices from Cuban patrimonial cities, the update of the partial plan for the management of the historic city and the opening of an exhibit about a project on creative art industries.
