Cuban Baseball Star Received with Honors in HometownBAYAMO, Cuba, Oct 9 (acn) Over a carriage, hailed by his people and at the pace dancing music, Alfredo Despaigne, today´s Cuba best slugger, was received in an official and popular way, at the Martires de Barbados stadium, in this city, capital of Granma province.

Sonia Virgen Pérez, first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in Granma, led the recognition act held to the athlete by his recent performance in the Japanese professional baseball league.

The ceremony took place shortly before the start of Wednesday's game between Granma and Industriales, as part of the 54th National Baseball Series.

Flowers, a recognition certificate, the greeting of the local and visiting players, and the continuous applause from the fans, made the evening unforgettable for the major slugger of the Granma Alazanes.

Despaigne played 45 games with the Chiba Lotte Marines, and ended with an average of .311, including 50 hits and 12 home runs.

Speaking to reporters, he said he felt himself really good in Japan and added that he will rest for a few days before joining Granma squad, now coached by veteran Carlos Marti.
