Cuba Coastal Climate Change Runs in Tune with Local Development Plans

Havana, Feb 1 (ACN) Cuban environment authorities confirmed the certainty that the coastal resilience project against Climate Chage, though ecosystem-based adaptation, will be achieved in tune with local and community development plans.

Known here as “My Coast, the project aims at strengthening coastal flexibility in the face of climate change, said Jose Fidel Santana, first deputy minister of Science, Technology and the Environment. “We will ensure financial ways for the management of the project and environmental and social safeguards, despite the impact by the US chase and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The government official addressed a workshop on the “My Coast” initiative at Havana’s National Hotel by saying that the country counts on capabilities, experience and knowledge to lead the project with the support of the UN Development Program (UNDP).

The “My Coast” project expands along over 1300 kilometers along the Cuban southern coast, which includes 24 municipalities in the provinces of Pinar del Rio, Artemisa, Mayabeque, Ciego de Avila, Camaguey, Las Tunas, and Granma.

The initiative will benefit 1.3 million citizens and is sponsored by the Green Climate Fund, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, while it is the first of its kind accessed by the Cuban Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment.
