Bayamo, 1 Feb (ACN) The National Program for the Prevention of Pregnancy in Adolescents, promoted by the Cuban Women’s Federation till April 4, kicked off Tuesday in a rural community of this city, in the eastern province of Granma.
The initiative includes educative actions, exchange of views with students, young leaders involved in the prevention of the phenomenon with large incidence in eastern Cuba.
Health experts and authorities along members of the Women’s Federation and the Education sector along with community leaders gathered at the site to educate locals about the scenario of the zone, which in 2021 alone reported 69 adolescent pregnancies, according to pediatrician Niurka Figueredo, advisor with the Infant-Maternal Program in Bayamo.
The issue is being addressed in schools and settlements considered as vulnerable and where the adolescent pregnancy cases are related to school drop-outs and dysfunctional households.
