Environmental Actions Target Polluting Sources in Western Cuba

Matanzas, Jan 31 (ACN) Over 80 percent of current polluting sources identified in western Matanzas province have already been targeted by rehabilitation actions, according to local environmental officials.

Nelvis Gomez Campos, delegate with the environment office in the territory told ACN that despite the impact by the COVID-19 pandemic on the local productive activity particularly in 2021, a series of actions were taken in favor of the environment.

Control measures and the monitoring of healthy water sources, harbors and the tourist corridor towards the popular Varadero tourist center were some of the actions, said the specialist, and added the study of the social and environmental impact by ongoing rehabilitation works underway in the city of Cardenas, where a water treatment plant benefits over 65 thousand people.

The official also recalled other actions aimed at bringing together the efforts of several local entities to complement social and economic activity with conservation-oriented steps, based on nine projects under implementation by a Program of Natural Resources and Environment.
