Cuba grants Life and Work awards to outstanding engineers of the country

HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 11 (ACN) In the presence of Cuban deputy PM Ines Maria Chapman Waugh, the National Engineering Life and Work Awards were granted today to six prestigious professionals of that discipline, with recognized contributions in Cuba and abroad.

In a solemn ceremony in Havana on the occasion of the Cuban Engineer's Day, which took place also in Holguin, Chapman Waugh praised the awarded engineers for their creativity and dedication to provide solutions.

She also referred to the daily obstacles faced by these professionals in Cuba due to the illegal economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States, the effects of which have increased in the last few years.

The Civil Engineering Society awarded its National Life and Work Award to Rene Antonio Garcia Depestre, who has carried out more than 30 research projects and is a guest professor at several Cuban and foreign universities.

For its part, the Society of Mechanical, Electrical and Industrial Engineering in construction sector activities bestowed two awards to Mario Ruperto Pila de la Osa and Luis Jeronimo Garcia Faure, from Matanzas and Santiago de Cuba, respectively.

Jorge Antonio Rodriguez Rojas, from Holguin, and Maria Elena Luna Castellanos, from Santiago de Cuba, were also awarded by the Society of Hydraulic Engineering.

Meanwhile, the Society of Geosciences and Chemical Engineering awarded its prize to Mines Roberto Rodriguez Cordova, from Holguin.

Every January 11, Cuba's engineers are honored as a tribute to Francisco de Albear y Fernandez, who was active in several works, such as the installation of the first telegraph lines in the country, and the creation of the Aqueduct to supply water to Havana.
