Renewable Energy Sources Benefit Cuban Rural Communities and Farms

Havana, Jan 5 (ACN) Cuba is setting up renewable energy systems in agricultural production areas and in rural communities, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.

The initiative aims at developing food production and contributing to the quality of life of the rural population, as well as targeting food security based on efficient resources, reads an announcement of the Ministry’s website.

The agriculture sector has great potential to take advantage of renewable energy sources given its large output of organic waste, which can be recycled by using different technology in an environment-friendly manner, according to the Ministry’s information.

Meanwhile, the geographical position of the island of Cuba allows the use of solar energy as important source to produce food, while along with recycling technology, the use of solar panels also favors low-carbon food production.

Other aspects addressed in the information included waste output from rice processors, the use of wind energy with over 4 thousand power generators currently in operations, as well as the progressive use of electric tractors and trucks for the transportation of agricultural products, along with hybrid buses.
