HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 6 (acn) Cuban personalities received on Monday in this capital the 2014 Habitat Award for their contribution to the development of settlements in the country on the occasion of World Habitat Day, established by the United Nations (UN) in 1985.
The award was handed over during a ceremony held at the Maqueta de La Habana (Model of Havana), Alina Azze Mezerene, a specialist with the National Housing Institute, told ACN.
Myrta Kaulard, resident coordinator of the UN system and representative of the United National Development Program (UNDP), addressed participants in the meeting.
On December 17, 1985, the UN General Assembly proclaimed the first Monday of October of every year as World Habitat Day, and in this opportunity its slogan is "Voices of the suburbs."
These awards began to be given in Cuba starting from 1999. Since then, and until 2010, 25 professionals and seven institutions have received it.
