Eastern Cuban province creates municipal councils to deal with gender-based violence

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, Nov 8 (ACN) In the House of Orientation for Women and the Family, in each municipality of the province of Santiago de Cuba, were created counselors for the treatment of gender violence, as part of the activities for the day of non-violence against women and girls.

Yohandra Jardines Gonzalez, ideological officer of the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC by its Spanish acronym) Municipal Committee in the capital municipality, told the Cuban News Agency that this will be a space of trust, where women can express their situations, receive guidance and specialized treatment.

They will also maintain a telephone line at the headquarters of the FMC Municipal Committee to denounce any act of violence or mistreatment, she informed.

As a main novelty, the multidisciplinary team will visit each week a community in Santiago de Cuba to hold workshops on the manifestations of mistreatment, emphasizing the need to report the crime, said the feminist leader.

On the other hand, they will promote videos on how to seek help in such situations, as well as participate in radio and television programs that address the issue.

We will dedicate some time to the preliminary draft of the Family Code to prepare ourselves as activists and be able to explain well the guarantees it offers to Cuban women in the face of violence in all its manifestations, Jardines Gonzalez added.

Likewise, the draft law regulates family planning and the sexual and reproductive rights of individuals by making issues such as adoption, gestation in solidarity and assisted reproduction techniques more flexible, she stressed.

The Day for non-violence against women and girls, which began on November 5 and will end on December 10, has a broad plan of actions, and as a central focus advocates zero tolerance to abuse in all its forms.
