MATANZAS, Cuba, Oct 6 (ACN) The spill of water and oil in the Yumurí 201 well, on the north coast of this city, is under control, according to José E. Alegría Águila, general director of the Empresa de Perforación y Extracción de Petróleo (EPEP) de Occidente (Western Oil Drilling and Extraction Company).
According to Alegría Águila, sea water was injected, as it corresponds in these cases, and currently some gas emergences are being monitored, while at the same time the pumping of salt water is being maintained.
The engineer explained that the spill of 15 or 20 cubic meters of crude, confined in an area of the coastal zone and contained with barriers, will not reach the sea, so it does not represent a danger for this type of ecosystem.
We have rescue and salvage brigades, as well as professionals from the Empresa de Perforación y Reparación Capital de Pozos de Petróleo y Gas, among other forces with the necessary training and equipment to undertake the containment tasks, assured Alegría Águila.
The specialist said that the upwelling began in the early hours of Tuesday morning and, as a consequence of the high pressure, it got out of control during a routine intervention to change the pump.
Yumurí 201, an inclined well with a depth of 3,700 meters, produces about 50 cubic meters of oil and 60,000 cubic meters of gas daily, although it is declining due to its aging.
However, the general director of EPEP described it as a well with important production volumes and hopes that it can recover and materialize the planned pump change.
