Cuba Reaffirms Position of Solidarity in Fight against Ebola

Cuba Reaffirms Position of Solidarity in Fight against EbolaHAVANA, Cuba, Sept 19 (acn) Cuba's Deputy Foreign Minister Abelardo Moreno addressed participants in the emergency session of the UN Security Council to analyze the international struggle against the Ebola fever virus epidemics, in which he ratified Cuba's position of contributing with health professionals to fight the epidemics as well as the island's solidarity with African peoples.

During the meeting, held on Thursday, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon announced the creation of the United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER), which will be spread in West Africa, and expressed that "an unprecedented situation requires unprecedented measures that male it possible to save lives and safeguard peace and security."
Likewise, the Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution in which it asks the international community, and particularly countries of the region, to urgently mobilize and offer technical resources and medical capacity to combat the lethal outbreak.
It also asks the UN Secretary General to make sure that all entities of the UN system speed up their response to the epidemics, including the development and implementation of designed plans in cooperation with the region's governments, and encourages the World Health Organization (WHO) to consolidate its technical leadership in this matter.
In the first week of October Cuba will send to Sierra Leone 165 health professionals, between physicians, nurses, epidemiologists and social workers, who will stay in that nation for six months.
