As part of his program of activities, the official visited Havana's Meteorology Institute (Insmet), where he received information on the work of that center in the areas of meteorological service and research, the Prensa Latina (PL) news agency reported.

The UNEP executive inquired about how the Caribbean nation helps other nations, within the framework of the South-South cooperation, in the transfer of knowledge, taking into account the experience in the field of disaster management and the administration of natural resources, which are within reach of the entire population.

In statements to PL he pointed out that he came to Cuba to know more about the programs implemented in this archipelago to reduce the impact of climate change, fight desertification, respond in the face of disasters, and identify mechanisms to boost cooperation.

In addition, he praised the work carried out by the country's authorities, which prioritize policies to protect the environment and prepare the people to respond in case of the occurrence of climatological phenomena like hurricanes and periods of drought.

The official's agenda included a visit to the Environment Agency, founded on March 6, 1995.
