Fidel Joins Intellectuals in Defense of Palestine

HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 9 (acn) The historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro joined his signature to those of the group of intellectuals and politicians that have signed the Manifesto “In Defense of Palestine,” promoted by the Network in Defense of Humanity.

Among personalities expressing their support for “In Defense of Palestine” we find Bolivian President Evo Morales; writer Eduardo Galeano; Nobel Prize winner Adolfo Perez Esquivel; the president of Havana’s Casa de las Americas cultural institution, poet Roberto Fernandez Retamar; prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso; U.S. writer Alice Walker; Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodriguez; bishops Raul Vera and Pedro Casaldaliga; and Brazilian leader Joao Pedro Stedile, among many others, the Granma newspaper reported on Friday.

The Manifesto by the Network in Defense of Humanity asks governments of the world to demand Israel to abide by the resolutions by the UN Security Council forcing it to withdraw from Gaza, the West Bank and Eastern Jerusalem, in compliance with the 1967 resolution.

So far, over 342,000 signatures have been received from artists, academicians, scientists, lawyers, journalists, professors, deputies, religious persons, physicians, students, farmers, workers, trade union leaders, leaders and social activists, among others, and by organizations and institutions of over 50 countries.
