Cuba reiterated its support to ECLAC countries

HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 5 (ACN) Cuba will always offer ECLAC a helping hand willing to cooperate and will be an ally in facing challenges, Rodrigo Malmierca, Cuban minister of foreign trade and foreign investment (MINCEX by its Spanish acronym) said on Tuesday.

Speaking at the 35th Session of the Committee of the Whole of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), held online, Malmierca said that his country's support will be evident in the new scenario of international economic crisis resulting from the COVID-19.

According to the head of MINCEX, Cuba is contributing its modest resources and capacities as a country to the ECLAC Secretariat, as well as its experience and good practices in South-South and triangular cooperation in different sectors such as education, sports, culture, and risk management and reduction.

Malmierca thanked the ECLAC secretariat, and especially its executive secretary, Alicia Barcena, for their efforts and dedication in accompanying the region in its implementation of the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030.

The delegation recognized the work of this UN body as a source of information and analysis on the economic and social consequences of the pandemic in Latin America and the Caribbean, in the follow-up to the evolution of the crisis and the measures taken by the 33 countries of the region to face the COVID-19.
As a result of the 35th Session of the Committee of the Whole, Costa Rica was elected President pro tempore of ECLAC at the 38th Session, to be held in October, which is expected to endorse the importance of multilateralism, cooperation and mutual understanding.
