HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 1 (acn) Characterized by not being very active, the hurricane season in the Atlantic basin, including the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, starts today and will run until November 30.
Despite the expected low activity, Cuba is not completely free of the danger of involvement by a cyclone, so we must be prepared for any eventuality, said DSc. Maritza Ballester Pérez of the Forecast Center of the Institute of Meteorology.
The expert confirmed that the behavior of the period corresponds to the formation of eight tropical cyclones (tropical storms plus hurricanes) throughout the area.
She explained that three of them should reach hurricane status when the thermal conditions of the waters of the tropical Atlantic and the Caribbean to be in the limits of normality.
Se said that the latter will contribute moderately to cyclonic activity, although the fundamental inhibitory factor in the development and intensification of tropical cyclones will be the upper tropospheric circulation of 10-12 kilometers high.
Such a situation is imposed on the North Atlantic by the presence of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the eastern equatorial Pacific, which is due to heating of the water, planned for the second half of the year, according to the source.
The Hurricane Committee of the 4th Region of the World Weather Organization, with 191 member states and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, announced the names of cyclones for the tropical Atlantic.
The names are Ana, Bill, Claudette, Danny, Erika, Fred, Grace, Henri, Ida, Joaquin, Kate, Larry, Mindy,
Nicholas, Odette, Peter, Rose, Sam, Teresa, Victor and Wanda.
Hurricane season had a similar behavior in 2014.
