HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 31 (acn) To give continuity to the healing actions undertaken by local authorities for 17 years, the Council of the Provincial Administration of Camagüey approved a program to combat pollution at Nuevitas Bay, Granma newspaper published today.
The plan includes a set of short, medium and long term measures to gradually eradicate the major polluting sources, with special emphasis on large industries such as that of Wires and Electrodes, Cement, Chemistry and the 10 de Octubre Thermoelectric plant.
It also includes the hydrographic basin of Saramaguacán River, the longest in the province, whose waters flow into the bay and drag wastes and other pollution sources from Siboney sugar mill and the towns of Sibanicú and Nuevitas.
The project foresees the rehabilitation or construction of wastewater treatment systems, maintenance of the oxidation ponds, eliminating leaks and cleaning of canals and drains, actions to be included in the investment plans of each of the entities involved.
According to Andrea Armas Rodriguez, provincial delegate of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, the strict compliance of current regulations , only way to preserve life in the area, is of great importance for ecosystem conservation.
Nuevitas Bay is considered by experts as one of the healthiest in the country in terms of pollution, however, is not immune from the ills caused by the systematic dumping of toxic substances in the water.
Since 1997 there is a working group made up by 28 organizations and entities to contribute to the rescue of the 42 square kilometers inlet, where there are developed sea-port, tourism, fishing and industrial economic activities.
