Situation of Cuban Soils to Debate

HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 25 (acn) Specialists from different organizations will meet today at Amigos del Pais Economic Society, in this city, to analyze the situation of agricultural soils in Cuba and their impact on people feeding.

Issues related to conservation agriculture, the use of new practices by farmers, such as agro-ecology, the combat against the factors affecting the deterioration of the areas devoted to food production will be the major topic of participants to the event.

Renowned experts like Dr. Olegario Muñiz Ugarte, President of the Cuban Society of Soil Science, will present the way in which the National Program for Improvement is implemented in Cuba.

According to official figures, the main causes of the loss of arable soils are the irrational mineral fertilization, burning fields, failure to rotate crops, indiscriminate logging and inadequate reforestation.
There is also lack of conservation of the natural forest that protects rivers and reservoirs, and excessive exploitation of wells and other natural water sources.

Strategies to mitigate land degradation include reforestation, building live fences for livestock, crop integrated management, selection of more drought-resistant clones and practice of poly-culture.

Currently, about three quarters of the 6.6 million arable land hectares the nation has are affected by any of the degrading factors and in many cases, by several of them at once.
