Latin American Film Festival Opens December 4 in Havana

HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 26 (acn) The 36th International Festival of the New Latin American Cinema will run December 4-14 in Havana with 166 films contesting the event, which will pay tribute to outstanding Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Maquez.

In a press conference on Tuesday, Festival´s director Ivan Giroud gave details of this year´s event, which will open at Havana´s Karl Marx Theater with the first digital screening of a film in Cuba after the Film Institute acquired a DSI digital projector.

A huge screen donated by Venezuela will allow a travelling show in different Havana neighborhoods as a new step to take the film creations to the people.

Out of more than 1 thousand 600 films, the festival picked 478, with 116 of them on the contest said Giroud, who also announced that Cuba will present 5 full-length films, including the already popular and award-winning Conducta.

Also included in the program are documentaries from Puerto Rico and films from by the US independent cinema, with Afro-American films shot between 1910 and 1950.

Lectures, homage-paying ceremonies, book presentations and exhibitions are also part of this event, and among the guests is renowned actor Benicio del Toro, who recently presented his film Lost Paradise.
